Why are some farmers more food secure than others? New study explores

A study, led by researchers based at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), decided to look at what contributes to food security within a household and what others can learn from these families. The team also wanted to explore whether there are gender differentiated responses to climate change. Continue reading

‘Hard talk’ on impacts of livestock, people and environment research at ILRI

On 28 May 2014, Brian Perry, a former program leader at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and a well-known analyst of livestock-for-development issues, engaged four senior scientists from ILRI’s Livestock Systems and Environment (LSE) program in a ‘hard talk’ interview on the role, relevance and impacts of ILRI’s research in livestock systems and the environment. A new perspective on the viability of sustainable intensification in drylands

A newly-published article based on sustainable intensification in drylands says agricultural intensity and vulnerability should be understood as distinct characteristics and that some forms of intensification can increase vulnerability and are unsustainable. Continue reading

What works in natural resource management and environmental governance: Insights from an expert

Natural resources and environmental management significantly affects pastoralists and other livestock keepers who live in drylands that cut across ecosystems. In such systems, wildlife and livestock move in and out of parks and community-protected areas with upstream-downstream effects along watersheds. How to incorporate these realities in an ecosystem management approach at a large scale is complex and not well understood because it … Continue reading

New environmental research centre improves GHG emissions inventories for the livestock sector in East Africa

To address the environmental problems faced by the East African region, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) has invested in an environmental research centre. Dubbed the Mazingira centre, the facility is based at the ILRI and has the capacity to measure a set of environmental parameters including livestock system GHG emissions, water flows as well as water and soil quality. In an interview with David Pelster, one of the scientists leading the initiative, we get to hear more about it. Continue reading
